Apple Mac Users Page

My own Mac

The Beast IV is a 1GHz 17" iMac G4 with 1GB RAM, broadband Internet, an Epson C1100 colour laser printer and a Canon LiDE30 scanner, running the latest version of Mac OS X.

I use Eclipse Evolution Broadband because it's cheap and I'm not an online gamer. It's up to 8MB but can be quite slow at busy times.

If you are a Mac user & want to create your own simple personal homepage, I recommend starting with HomeMaker, a freeware HyperCard stack by Bernie Dodge. Thanks Bernie, there should be more software like this!

You can then massage your HTML using only Text Editor or SimpleText, with the help of a good reference book such as the HTML Sourcebook.

For more advanced results try Adobe PageMill, if you can find it. I've used it ever since I found that text-only is no way to manage tables.

I don't work with the modern graphic HTML editors like DreamWeaver and GoLive - they are horribly complicated to learn, and add stuff you won't enjoy weeding out if ever you have to hand-edit a page later.

The Beast's favourite links are here...

Apple UK - something new almost every week.

Apple Store UK- buy direct from Apple, special deals not available elsewhere.

Download.com for all Mac shareware.

eBay's section for second-hand Mac gear.

Marathon Central - the classic Mac OS 8/9 game.

A charming picture of Microsoft in 1978!
